Guide to Australian Mattress Sizes for Bedding and Sheets
Mattress and Sheets Size: Differences in Twin, Full/Double, Queen, King and More
Creating the perfect bedroom that’s conducive to better sleep involves more than choosing the right mattress. Much like Goldilocks, choosing the right size sheets and pillows can contribute to overall comfort and even the room's aesthetic. In this blog post, we’ll address common questions about bed and mattress sizes as well as fitting concerns for bedding such as sheets, pillows, and comforters.
Mattress Sizes in the US, Canada, Australia and UK
There are noticeable differences in mattress sizes and availability between the United States, Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom. Due to the lack of international sizing standards, mattress dimensions can vary, even among those labeled as the same size, such as Queen. Differences of up to an inch may exist between brands or even within the same brand due to manufacturing tolerances, padding, and support variations.
This is all to say that it can be quite difficult for consumers purchasing bedding from international retailers and why we offer a 30-night, no questions asked return policy to ensure Rest products are a fit for both you and your mattress!
We’ve compiled a list of the most common dimensions of mattress sizes for Australia, US, Canada, Australia and UK, and the size of Rest’s products as it fits onto these beds.

What is the Most Popular Mattress Size?
The most popular mattress size is the queen size mattress. Ideal for both individuals and couples, a queen mattress offers the perfect balance of comfort, space, and versatility, making it suitable for various room sizes. With dimensions typically measuring a width of 60 inches by a height of 80 inches, it provides ample sleeping space for two people without overwhelming most bedroom layouts.
Queen size mattresses can accommodate sleepers comfortably while still allowing for additional bedroom furniture and movement, making it a top choice in households across the globe. Whether for a master bedroom, guest room, or a small apartment, the queen size mattress stands out as the go-to option for most sleeping arrangements.
Considerations when Shopping for Sheets
When buying bedding for your bed, ensure the dimensions are compatible with your mattress. Use a tape measure and record the dimensions of your bed to ensure a perfect fit as slight differences can affect how sheets fit or how your finished bed will look.
Sizing Terminology Differences Between Countries
What is considered a "King" size in one country may not match the dimensions of a "King" in another. As mentioned before, a UK king is closer in size to a US queen. Always check the dimensions when purchasing a mattress or bedding to ensure they meet your requirements.
Custom and Specialty Sizes of Mattress Unique to Countries
Some countries have unique sizes not found elsewhere, such as the North American “California King/Cali King” and Australian "King Single." Additionally, specialty beds like adjustable beds or custom-made mattresses may not adhere to standard sizes, in which case purchasing a size-up for bedding where possible may be preferable to ensure it fits.
Understanding these differences is crucial for ensuring that your mattress and bedding purchases meet your needs and preferences. Though not standardized even within a country, most mattress manufacturers only have ±1 inch variation in differences. This does however, highlight the importance of purchasing bedding from companies that offer return policies, such as Rest!
Can I use King Fitted Sheets on a Queen Size Mattress?
Using fitted sheets intended for a king size bed on a queen bed is possible, but it's not ideal. While the larger sheets can cover the mattress, you'll likely deal with excess fabric that needs tucking under the mattress, leading to a less snug fit. For a tailored look and feel, matching the sheet size to the mattress is best.
Can I use Queen Fitted Sheets on a Full / Double Size Mattress?
Using queen fitted sheets on a full or double bed can be a temporary solution, but expect a looser fit. The difference in width and length between queen and full sizes means excess material, which might lead to discomfort or a messy look. For long-term use, invest in sheets that match your bed's dimensions as this method is less recommended than using a king-sized fitted sheet for a queen mattress as they have the same lengths, which reduces chances of fabric gathering.
Can you use King Size Sheets on a Full Size Mattress?
King size sheets on a full size bed is not advised due to significant size differences. The sheets will be too large, making it impossible to achieve a snug fit and cause the excess fabric to gather or become loose, resulting in discomfort during sleep.
Why don't all Queen Size Sheets Fit a Queen Size Bed?
Not all queen-sized sheets fit a queen bed perfectly due to variations in mattress depth. Modern mattresses come in a range of thicknesses, especially with the addition of pillow-tops and mattress toppers. Look for deep-pocket sheets such as the Rest Evercool® Cooling Sheet Set, which is designed to accommodate mattresses up to 18” inches deep, ensuring a perfect fit no matter the differences in dimensions between brands.
Are King Pillows Too Big for a Queen Bed?
King pillows, typically longer than standard ones, can fit on a queen bed, but they'll extend beyond the edges, which might not suit everyone's aesthetic preferences. If you prefer a plush, luxurious look, they can work, but standard or queen pillows offer a better fit and proper support.
Can you use Queen Pillows on a King Size Bed?
King size pillows for a king size bed is preferable as king size pillows are proportionate to king beds, providing end-to-end coverage and support.
Can you use a King Bed Frame for a California King?
A king bed frame does not typically fit a California king mattress due to the latter's longer and slightly narrower dimensions. If you're transitioning between these bed sizes, ensure your frame matches the specific dimensions of your mattress.
Will California King Sheets Fit a King Bed?
California King sheets are designed for mattresses that are longer and narrower than standard kings. Using them on a king bed can lead to a poor fit, with excess length and not enough width. For the best fit, use sheets that match your mattress type.
Can you use a California King Box Spring with a King Mattress?
Using a California King box spring with a king mattress is not recommended due to the difference in dimensions. Similarly, fitting a California king sheet on a king mattress or vice versa will result in a mismatch. Always match your bedding and foundation to the specific dimensions of your bed for optimal comfort and support.
Can you use Two Twin Size Comforters/Duvets/Quilts on a King Size Bed?
A combination of two twin size comforters and/or duvets on a king size bed can be a practical solution for partners with different warmth needs, allowing for customization of bedding without compromising on comfort.
